Gmail Mobile Java Client Reviewed
Cédric Beust, software engineer, Gmail for mobile devices team have announced on the official Google Blog the availability of a new Gmail Java Client for Mobile devices. To download it point your mobile browser to gmail.com/app, you should get a similar screen depending on your mobile phone :

The downloaded file is about 120Kb, after installing you can run the application which will be launched in full screen :

Inbox
The only difference I have found that I'm now checking email from a different client, not from a mobile web browser. First screen after login, a "loading" message in top right of the screen but in orange this time, then inbox is displayed see screenshot below, and tell me if you see big difference between read and unread messages ?

Then something that I didn't like at all that after scrolling to the bottom page, the client asked to reconnect, while I still click on the down button. I understand that it disconnects immediately after retrieving emails, and then trying to reconnect to retrieve next page ? I'm not sure but I'm not charged for connection, only for bandwidth so I don't see any problem for keep the connection alive.
Reading messages
Reading message is similar to Gmail with colors, rounded corner design, attachment and all. The menu give you options to Reply, Forward, Add labels, mark as spam, then Search, compose and exit Gmail.

Custom "Go To" Menu
On the main menu there is a Go To shortcut that you can customize to display the different folders in the menu, or you can uncheck the unwanted ones.

Compose
The compose page is very basic with two fields for Receiver and Subject, and a textarea for the message.

Conclusion
Overall, I don't see any big difference until now, probably if a caching feature is implemented so it don't have to reload the inbox from server every time if no new email is available. The client is in Java so it should be compatible with all new devices, but you can always check the list of supported devices for compatibilities.
Personally I prefer Pocket Gmail rather than this new client, even that Pocket Gmail is no longer supported by its author, I'm trying to fix some current bugs and probably implement some new features in the future; but until now I find it much better. What do you think ?
