Google Trends Reviewed

A new Google product have just been announced and entered the Labs his name is Google Trends. Google trends builds on the idea behind the Google Zeitgeist, allowing you to sort through several years of Google search queries from around the world to get a general idea of everything from user preferences on ice-cream flavors to the relative popularity of politicians in their respective cities or countries.

Google Trends analyzes a portion of Google web searches to compute how many searches have been done for the terms you enter relative to the total number of searches done on Google over time. We then show you a graph with the results -- our search-volume graph.

Located just beneath our search-volume graph is our news-volume graph. This graph shows you the number of times your topic appeared in Google News stories. When Google Trends detects a spike in the volume of news stories for a particular term, it labels the graph and displays the headline of an automatically selected Google News story written near the time of that spike. Currently, only English-language headlines are displayed, but we hope to support non-English headlines in the future.

Google Trends is a tool which will be useful not only for searches but also for all other google's product such Froogle, Adwords, AdSense, Google Base ... For example it's possible to analyze the trends for a certain family of products to better develop your Froogle listing or database of products on Google Base, It could be also very helpful to detect the importance of keywords related to news or events, for example you can see if searches for a certain product have increased in easter, christmas or thanksgiven ...

An interesting option in Google Trends is the possibility to filter using date or region, this will give you the possibility to see the number of search for a certain keyword in a specific date and a specific region. Such information would be very important to create more interesting campains using Adwords and target with more precision the users that will be interesting in your product for example without waisting your time for example advertising in countries that are not really interested in such keyword.
